The Parisian covered passages are the ancestors of our current commercial galleries and are often known by the names of their rich owners. Built in the beginning of the 19th century to allow Parisians to be able to stroll peacefully without fear of bad weather, they were mainly clustered near the north of the Jardin du Palais Royal. This area was once the largest center of Parisian pleasure (with about 500 prostitutes spread along columns of stone or wood at the time) and its closure by Louis Philippe promoted the expansion of covered passages ...
Les passages couverts parisiens sont les ancêtres de nos actuelles galeries commerciales et portent souvent le nom de leurs riches propriétaires. Construits au début du 19 ème siècle pour permettre aux parisiens de pouvoir flâner tranquillement sans crainte du mauvais temps, ils étaient principalement regroupés au nord du Jardin du Palais Royal. Celui était autrefois le plus grand centre parisien de plaisir (avec près de 500 prostituées réparties le long des colonnes de pierre ou de bois à l'époque) et sa fermeture par Louis Philippe a favorisé l'expansion des passages couverts...
Many have unfortunately disappeared with the building of the new streets by the famous architect Hausmann and there are now only a dozen when there were 150 then. Some have been renovated and are now prestigious galleries, others deserve to be restored, but all are worth exploring or rediscovering through a nostalgic stroll.
Beaucoup ont disparu avec l'apparition des grands axes Hausmaniens, et ils ne sont plus qu'une douzaine maintenant alors qu'on en comptait 150 alors. Cetains ont été rénovés et sont redevenus des galeries prestigieuses, d'autres mériteraient d'être restaurés, mais tous sont à découvrir ou à redécouvrir au cours d'une balade nostalgique.
